Fieldtrips to Tucker House
Tucker House offers a variety of education programs suitable for any group. These fun and interactive programs can be adapted to any age and teach participants about a variety of environmental issues. The programs are curriculum connected, making them an ideal enrichment of classroom experience. These programs fall into four categories: Tours, Food Choices and the Environment, Eco-Adventure, and Custom Experience

Tours
These are guided, interactive, question and answer tours of the Tucker House property. Choose two of the three tours listed below for a full day program.
Nature Walk: Our guided nature walks take you through areas of geological and ecological significance, from the glacial till and limestone bedrock, past a regenerating pasture of clay soil, through our old growth forest to a small wetlands, and back. With over 30 acres of beautiful grounds, Tucker House provides a unique opportunity to learn about nature, biodiversity, and living lightly on the earth.
History Tour: Learn about the story behind this magnificent property! Follow the Tucker family from their immigration into Canada through the economic boom and social developments that led the Tuckers to become an influential member of the community. Imagine yourself back in the time of Confederation, railroads, and lumber barons. Discover how the house was built from local materials, making it a good example of sustainable living.
Organic Garden Tour and Activities: During the growing season (June-October), take part in a tour of our organic gardens. See and take part in sustainable agriculture practices. Learn about community shared agriculture (CSA) and why Tucker House participates in this unique farmer-consumer arrangement.
Food Choices and the Environment
In this full day program, participants learn, through a series of games and other activities, the impact of their food choices on the environment. This program is best experienced between early June and early October. Participants will learn:
- A more natural way of growing food without use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizer.
- The importance of eating foods grown nearby and in season now.
- Why naked food is the way to go.
- How to use colour to find out how nutritious a food is.
- The incredible benefit to the environment of eating no or less meat.
Eco-Adventure
New and exclusive to Tucker House! Participants go on an adventure where the goal is to learn about a specific environmental issue. Due to the level of independence required of students, this program is best suited to students in grade 6 or older. The first installment in a planned series of Eco-Adventures is The Environmental Cost of Everyday Life. In this full day activity, students will learn the impact of 5 aspects of their everyday lives (food, transportation, water use, consumption and waste, and energy use) and what they can do to lessen that impact.

If you are working on specific topic or learning about a certain environmental issue and would like a field trip to complement your in-class experience, why not work with a Tucker House educator to develop a more customized program that is right you your group?
With enough notice we can develop a program to meet your specific needs starting with the curriculum expectations you wish to address and designing backwards from there.
